Restaurant website with online ordering: stop paying commission on every order
Delivery apps take 20 to 30 percent of every order. A restaurant website with direct WhatsApp or online ordering keeps that margin. Here is what to build first and what it costs.

Food delivery apps bring new customers, but they charge a commission on every order, own the customer relationship and can change the rules overnight. A restaurant website with direct ordering does not replace the apps. It gives regulars a cheaper way to order from you, and it gives you their phone numbers.
Three levels of direct ordering
- Menu plus WhatsApp. A fast menu page with photos, prices and a "Order on WhatsApp" button that pre-fills the message. Works for most restaurants, cafés, cloud kitchens and tiffin services. From ₹2,000 as a landing page or ₹6,000 as a full website.
- Cart and online payment. Customers add items, choose pickup or delivery, and pay by UPI or card. Orders arrive on a tablet or printer. Priced as e-commerce from ₹18,000.
- Accounts, offers and loyalty. Saved addresses, order history, coupons and a simple points system. This moves into web application territory.
Most restaurants should start at level one and move up only when WhatsApp order volume becomes hard to manage.
What makes the menu page sell
- Photos of the dishes you actually serve, taken in daylight.
- Prices visible without tapping.
- Clear delivery area, minimum order and timing.
- Dietary labels and today's specials near the top.
- One tap to order, one tap to call, one tap for directions.
Keep the apps, grow the direct channel
Put your website link on packaging, bills, table tents and Instagram. Offer a small direct-order discount that still costs less than the commission. Within a few months many restaurants see regulars move to direct ordering.
Costs to budget beyond the website
- Domain and hosting: ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 per year.
- Payment gateway charges on card and UPI payments, typically under 2 percent.
- A tablet or printer at the counter for level two.
Frequently asked questions
Can orders go straight to my kitchen printer?
Yes, with the cart and payment option. For WhatsApp ordering, the order arrives as a message you confirm manually.
Can I update prices myself?
Yes. Menu editing is handled either through a simple content editor or a shared sheet that the site reads, depending on how often your menu changes.
Will the website work with Zomato and Swiggy?
They operate separately. The website is your own channel. Many restaurants list on the apps for discovery and use the website for repeat orders.
