Running a business app on free cloud tiers: what actually fits
Free cloud tiers can run a real business application, including a CRM, for a small team. Here is what fits, what breaks, and how to set it up so a free tier does not become a surprise outage.

Free cloud tiers are better than they used to be. Acquiretech runs a production CRM with a database, background worker and backups on a free virtual machine, with the frontend on a free managed platform. It works, with limits that you should know before relying on it.
What fits on free tiers
- A business website or landing page with forms.
- A small web app or self-hosted CRM for up to a few dozen users.
- A database of hundreds of thousands of records.
- Background jobs such as reminders and email sending.
- Daily backups to the same machine, with periodic copies elsewhere.
What does not fit
- Heavy traffic or large file storage.
- Anything that cannot tolerate an occasional restart.
- Workloads that need more than one or two CPU cores and a gigabyte or two of memory.
- Compliance regimes that require specific guarantees.
The risks and how to handle them
- Reclaimed capacity. Some providers reclaim idle free instances. Keep the application active and keep encrypted backups off the machine.
- Resource limits. A one-gigabyte server needs swap space, lean services and limits on memory-hungry components.
- Provider changes. Free tiers change. Build with standard tools so a move to a ₹500 VPS takes an afternoon.
- Single machine. Test the restore process, not just the backup.
What Acquiretech sets up
- Operating system hardening, firewall and HTTPS with automatic certificate renewal.
- Containers for the application, database and any supporting services, sized for the machine.
- Daily encrypted backups, a tested restore script and a written recovery plan.
- Monitoring that alerts you before a disk fills or a service stops.
Cloud deployment is scoped per project. For a small CRM or app it is usually a fixed price with a documented handover.
Frequently asked questions
Is free hosting safe for customer data?
Safety comes from configuration, not price. With HTTPS, access controls, updates and backups, a free-tier server is as safe as a paid one of the same size.
What happens if the free tier disappears?
Because everything is standard and backed up, the application moves to a small paid server with minimal downtime. We document the steps in advance.
When should I pay for hosting?
When uptime matters enough that an occasional restart is unacceptable, or when traffic and data outgrow the limits. For many small teams that moment is a year or more away.
